We've moved over to our new hosting site, podbean.com. The URL for the new podcast page is pipetalk.podbean.com. We plan on leaving this site up until we start posting full content over on the new site, but won't be updating it anymore. Plans are to pull it down by the new year. See you over at Podbean!

Our old host for our RSS feed has disappeared, and we are now looking around for a new home. As most sites that do RSS hosting also do blogging and websites, this blog will probably shut down as well once we find our new home. I will post the link to the new blog here once its settled, stay tuned!

It's Alive!

Things have been nuts for the last two years (last post was in February of 2009, egad!) I changed careers and have gone through two company changes, found a fiancee and am getting married this year. Matt, my partner in crime, and his lovely wife have had a baby (yay!), and things are now finally settling down to where we feel we can start podcasting again. We will be going to a once-monthly format, that will allow us to meet deadlines and still get life done.

Look for some videos soon(ish), as Matt just got given a box of pipes by his father-in-law, and we're going to sit down and clean 'em up, walking you through the process. We are planning for actual regular audio podcast episodes to start up again with the new year.

A Break?

The boys have been taking a break from the podcast for a bit. Now that they are back on their feet, I will relay the comments demanding their return to podcasting-dom ^.^

We had a lot of fun at the pipe and cigar expo that TAPS put on, thanks to everyone we talked to, people were great and very game to talk 'on the record'. This is a LONG episode (1 hour) for us, and because of the nature of the interviews I wasn't able to do any subtle editing, so mostly I didn't. This is as close to raw audio as you will get from us, the sound quality isn't the greatest because of all the background chatter, but our interviewees are very understandable. Enjoy!

We talked to TAPS representatives about the show and the group, as well as general rambling about the state of the hobby. For info about this great group in the Raleigh, NC area, send them an email.

Talked to Bennie Baker, carver of great pipes from red cedar, dogwood and ocean driftwood. Email him about his pipes or visit his website.

Talked to Jerry Perry of Perry's Pipes. He carves his pipes out of mountain laurel, beautiful stuff! His site is here and you can email him as well.

Finally we talked to Sun Butler, a tobacco chemist who has organized a group of USDA Certified organic tobacco growers, into: Organic Smoke Inc. They are putting out a blend of organic tobacco called Organic Pipe Dreams that is being tinned and marketed by Cornell and Diehl, look for it sometime in May after the Chicago pipe show.

Cuts of Tobacco

Ribbon- "Ribbon" cut tobacco is generally between 1/16"(1.58 mm) and 3/32"(2.38 mm) wide, and forms "strands" of varying lengths. Very common cut, especially for aromatics and VaPers.
Example- Haddo's Delight, reviewed here.

Shag- Very fine ribbon cut, often used for seasoning tobaccos like latakia and perique
Example- McClelland Black Shag, reviewed here.

Cube- pressed and then cut into tiny squares, a common cut for burley
Example- LJ Heart Burley, reviewed here.

Flake- in the US, refers to small irregular cut tobacco, with pieces no bigger than 1/8”(22mm).
Example- Larry's Blend, reviewed here.

Plug- large brick of pressed tobacco, can be cut up into various types depending on thickness
Example- Coniston Cut Plug, reviewed here.

Krumble Kake- Thick wide slices that break apart easily.
Example- Penzance, reviewed here.

Flake- aka “slices” in the US, thinner sliced plug can be smoked whole or rubbed out.
Example- Erinmore Flake, reviewed here.

Rope- aka “lanyard” tobacco has been spun in to a long strand.

Spun-cut- aka “disk” tobacco is a rope that has been sliced up.
